Health & Safety Hazards

Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD)

When workers lift heavy objects, reach overhead, bend into awkward positions, or perform repetitive tasks, they are prone to painful musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). These conditions include sprains, strains, and other harm to muscles, ligaments, nerves, and tendons. These injuries, and their accompanying costs, can largely be prevented by applying ergonomic principles. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends seven steps in executing an ergonomic process: provide management support and commitment, involve workers, provide thorough training, identify problems, encourage early reporting of MSD symptoms, implement solutions to control the hazards, and evaluate progress.

Extreme Temperatures

Some employees may be exposed to excessive cold and heat, making their jobs more difficult and putting them at risk for illness. Cold stress can cause hypothermia, trench foot, and frostbite. High heat and humidity cause dehydration, heat stress, and heat stroke. Employers can plan ahead for these conditions, provide PPE for their workers, and implement schedules that limit exposure.

Machine Hazards

There is a myriad of specialty equipment and machinery found in manufacturing plants. These are sometimes quite large and powerful. Those using and working around them are at risk for accidents. To prevent injuries, OSHA requires employers to address and control the hazards with machine guarding and other solutions to prevent injuries and fatalities.

Noise Workers

The sound level in manufacturing plants is often very loud. Prolonged exposure to both loud noise and sudden bursts of noise heavily impact hearing. OSHA requires employers to address hazards to hearing. Controlling noise exposure and using personal protective equipment (PPE) prevent hearing loss on jobsites.

Struck By/Caught In/Caught Between Incidents

Employees may work around heavy, powerful objects and machinery. Hard hats, steel or composite toe footwear, and safety eyewear are among the personal protective equipment (PPE) that prevents injury in situations where the hazards can't be removed.

Electrical and other Hazardous Energy

Uncontrolled electrical or hazardous energy can harm workers if machinery isn't operated or maintained correctly. Both operational and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures should be followed at all times.

Sharp Surfaces

Cuts and lacerations can occur during many phases of the manufacturing process, including working around exposed screws or with glass. Implementing automation and other controls reduce this risk.

Chemical Exposure

Burns and inhalation sickness can severely affect manufacturing employees. Workplaces with hazardous chemicals must use identifying labels, safety data sheets, PPE, engineering controls, and employee training to limit exposure.

Airborne Particulates

A clean indoor air environment is vital to worker health. OSHA requires the use of engineering controls to eliminate particles from the air (ie process modification), administrative controls (ie scheduling arrangements), or PPE usage (ie air purifying respirators) to protect workers and maintain levels at or below the permissible exposure limit (PEL).

At Risk For Impact Injuries?

When it comes to our hands, it’s hard to imagine what we’d do or how we’d function in our day-to-day lives without them. From tying our shoes, to driving, to signing our names, we depend on our hands immeasurably. For people on the job, losing the use of their hands due to an accident is both problematic and traumatic.

Safe Forklift Operation Checklist

Forklifts are a warehouse staple. They move heavy objects, load and unload trucks, and raise and lower pallets. Their versatility is unmatched. Because they’re so commonplace, a worker might think that they pose no threat to their safety. However, they can cause collisions, falls, tip-overs, and struck-by accidents.

6 Questions To Help You Maintain And Inspect Your Eyewash Station

Our eyesight is invaluable, so it’s crucial to protect it, including on the job. In workplaces where employees are exposed to corrosive or caustic materials, eye injuries blind thousands annually. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates that eyewash stations be available where injurious chemicals are present. Installing an eyewash station isn’t enough, though; it requires regular inspections to ensure that it’s functioning properly and close enough to handle any liquid splash incident.

We've Got Your Back... And Knees And Shoulders! Workplace Tips For A Strong Ergonomic Process

Ergonomics. We hear the term often. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) describes it as the process of “fitting the job to the person,” meaning using the principles of a safety and health program to address and reduce risk factors. This process can help improve productivity, reduce muscle fatigue, and lower the amount and seriousness of workplace musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) that affect workers’ muscles, tendons, and nerves. These injuries are one of the leading causes of lost work days.

The Difference Between Alloy, Composite, And Steel Toe Footwear

Knowing what kind of footwear will keep you safe at your job is important. Not only should they protect your feet from falling objects, but also from bruises, burns, sprains, and cuts. Being aware of the differences between alloy, composite, and steel toes is a good place to start in making your selection.

How Facility Maintenance Can Reduce Worker Injury

How can regular machinery maintenance equal greater worker safety? Improperly functioning machinery puts workers at risk of injury or worse. Regularly scheduled maintenance in your facility and on your jobsite can help diminish the risk, with the added benefits of minimizing downtime and saving money
