NHTSA Reminds Drivers to Put the Phone Away or Pay

The statistics are startling. In 2022, distracted driving killed 3,308 people, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Cell phone use, specifically texting, talking, and social media use, has become the most widespread distraction.
The NHTSA sponsors Distracted Driving Awareness Month each year to remind motorists of the deadly dangers of losing focus behind the wheel. Their 2025 theme is Put the Phone Away or Pay. They also offer the following safety tips:
- If you need to send a text, pull over and park your car in a safe location first.
- Assign your passenger as your “designated texter” to respond to calls and messages.
- Don’t scroll through apps while driving.
- If you find it challenging to give up cell phone use while driving, put your phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat until you arrive at your destination.
Cell phone use isn’t the only distraction to drivers. Multitasking like adjusting mirrors and your seat, eating, or operating a GPS system also diverts the driver’s attention away from the road. To maintain focus, it’s best to do all these things before you embark.
